  15. 1.  Special Note About Installing Internet Software Options

  17. Algebra Smart  comes with an optional feature that allows you to connect to The Princeton
  18. Review's home page via the Internet.  If you've never used the Internet and have 
  19. wondered what it can do for you, this is a great way to find out; we maintain an active home 
  20. page with new drills and a lot of educational material that you may find useful.
  21. But if you don't have a modem, or if you don't want to bother, don't worry.  Everything 
  22. in this program stands on its own, and you don't need a modem to run anything.
  23.  
  24. Here are some things that you will need to know in order to decide whether to use the 
  25. Internet option and in order to install the software properly.  You should read this 
  26. before continuing with the installation.
  27.  
  28. If you do NOT have a modem, you should NOT install the Internet option.  If you get a 
  29. modem later, you can easily re-run the setup program to update your software.
  30.  
  31. If you have a modem, be sure that your modem is connected to your computer and 
  32. connected to a phone line, and then turn it on.
  33.  
  34. You need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet.  This is somewhat 
  35. analogous to having a long distance phone company like ATT, MCI, or Sprint to 
  36. connect you to long distance service.  
  37.  
  38. In case you need to set up an account with an ISP, we have included software from an 
  39. established Internet Service Provider called EarthLink to help you.  If you already have a 
  40. provider, then you can skip this step.  EarthLink, like American On-Line, Prodigy, and 
  41. CompuServe, charges a monthly fee for its service, but Princeton Review customers
  42. get seven days of unlimited, free service when they sign up.
  43.  
  44. If you decide to establish an account with EarthLink, then you will be asked to complete 
  45. an on-line registration form, including credit card information for your EarthLink account, 
  46. and then your modem will dial EarthLink to connect you.  This whole process should take 
  47. only a few minutes.

  49. If you install EarthLink and you need technical support, then you should contact EarthLink 
  50. technical support at 1-800-395-8410 or via email at support@earthlink.com.  If you call The 
  51. Princeton Review, then we will do all we can to help you, but our expertise is limited to 
  52. the Algebra Smart program.

  54. You use special software, called a browser, to view the Internet through your ISP. 
  55. Continuing the metaphor of the long distance service, you can think of the browser as 
  56. being like your telephone: it connects to the phone line and makes the electronic signals 
  57. intelligible.  Algebra Smart supports the most popular browsers in the market: 
  58. Netscape, Explorer, and Mosaic.  If you already have one of these and you have an ISP, 
  59. then you do not need EarthLink in addition.  However, Netscape is available in the software 
  60. package with EarthLink, should you need it.
  61.  
  62. If you choose not to install EarthLink when you first set up your program, you can install 
  63. it later by going to the CD-ROM going into the EarthLink folder on the CD-ROM drive and 
  64. running the setup program.  EarthLink has installers in separate folders for Windows 95, 
  65. Windows 3.1, and Macintosh.
  66.  
  67. 2.   Video Issues in Algebra Smart
  68.  
  69.     a.  256 color monitors
  70. If your monitor is set to use fewer than 256 colors (for example, if you have a Windows 3.1
  71. VGA video driver), then you will not be able to run Algebra Smart.  
  72. In that case, you can change to a video driver that is already on your system, but that is 
  73. not installed.  You can install it as described below. 
  74.  
  75. Algebra Smart works best if your monitor is set to use exactly 256 colors.  If you normally
  76. run your Windows 95 system in High Color of True Color (which use more than 256 colors), 
  77. the program will run more slowly and will not look any better than in 256 colors.   
  78. We recommend, therefore, that you switch to 256 colors as follows:
  79.  
  80. Windows 3.1:  Go to Main | Windows Setup | Options | Display.  Select SVGA with 640 by 
  81. 480.  In case you do not have an SVGA driver listed, we have included the generic 
  82. Microsoft SVGA driver on the CD-ROM in a directory called 'Utils.'  You can copy it 
  83. into your Windows System folder and install it from there.
  84.  
  85. Windows 95:   Go to 'Settings' in the Start Menu and select 'Control Panel.'  That will 
  86. open a window listing all the items you can change in your computer system.  Select 
  87. 'Display,' and click on the 'Settings' tab.  On the bottom left you will see 'Color 
  88. Palettes.'  Set it to '256 colors.'
  89.  
  90.     b.  Using QuickTime with Algebra Smart
  91. Algebra Smart requires QuickTime for Windows, and installs it if your system doesn't 
  92. have it already.  There are different versions of QuickTime for Windows 3.1 and for 
  93. Windows 95, and Algebra Smart will install the most recent version for you.  On some 
  94. Windows 95 systems, the Windows 3.1 (16-bit version) and the Windows 95 (32-bit version) 
  95. of QuickTime for Windows conflict with each other.  This rarely occurs, but when it does, 
  96. users have problems with all videos using QuickTime.

  98. If you have video problems, we suggest that you go to the Control Panel and Uninstall 
  99. QuickTime for Windows (32-bit).  Then insert the CD-ROM and run the program 
  100. QT32INST.exe, which is in the QTW2 directory.
  101.  
  102. On some Windows 95 machines with QuickTime pre-loaded at purchase of the machine, 
  103. QuickTime's default audio settings are incorrect.  If you have scrambled audio when 
  104. videos play during the program, then try opening the Control Panel and double-click 
  105. QuickTime.  Select the 'Audio' tab (if you don't see the Audio tab, click the button 
  106. on the bottom that says 'More').  Be sure that the 'Requested hz' and 'Actual hz' are 
  107. both set to 'Default.'
  108.  
  109. 3.  System Configuration Issues
  110.  
  111.     a.  Optimizing System Performance on Windows 95
  112. If you are running Windows 95, then you can adjust your system to get better performance 
  113. for multimedia applications.  Go to 'Settings' in the Start Menu and select 'Control Panel.'  
  114. That will open a window listing all the items you can change in your computer system.  
  115. Select 'System,' and click on the 'Performance' tab.  On the bottom left click a button 
  116. called 'File System.'  On the Hard Disk tab, set 'Read-ahead Optimization' to 'Full,' and 
  117. on the CD-ROM tab set 'Supplemental cache size' to 'Large.'
